Nested Loops
The mission of MoMath is to enhance public understanding and perception of mathematics. In February 2026, MoMath moved to 635 Sixth Avenue, commissioning a number of new interactive exhibits, including “Nested Loops”.
Rooted in mathematics and engineering, the work reflects principles analogous to fractals and modular systems, where repetition and scale generate complexity. Consisting of four rotating discs, pulleys and loops of rope, 'Nested Loops' turns structure into performance, revealing how simple mechanical relationships can unfold into endlessly dynamic forms.
Wall-mounted and running continuously, Nested Loops is a mesmerizing art piece. It can also interact with viewers who, by turning knobs, direct each disc to spin clockwise or counterclockwise. Users can initiate 16 unique sequences. Although the movement is two dimensional, viewers may perceive three dimensional objects rotating in space due to the illusion of dynamic perspective.
